General:
Perennial from a deep rhizome; stems creeping but not twining, 10-30 cm long.
Leaves:
Stem leaves alternate, thick, fleshy, broadly kidney-shaped, 1.5-4 cm wide, glabrous, basal lobes somewhat angled.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of single, 3-6 cm wide, wide-mouthed, funnel-shaped flowers subtended by or equal to the broad, heart-shaped bracts; petals pinkish-purplish, fused; sepals oblong egg-shaped, bristle-tipped, about 1 cm long.
Fruits:
Capsules subglobose, 1.5 cm long; seeds 6-8 mm long, essentially smooth.

Habitat / Range

Moist to mesic sand dunes in the lowland zone; infrequent along the coast; S to CA, also in the islands of the Pacific Ocean and Europe.
